What brought you to Crossfit in the first place?
I have always undertaken exercise, however, was finding it a bit dull and difficult to motivate myself (normal gym). I was also looking for something that would improve my strength having had some back problems in the past. Luckily for me, I knew Ben and was intrigued by CrossFit and its broad range of exercise disciplines and thought it would be something that I would enjoy. I came into the old Newington CrossFit and never looked back.
What was your first impression? How has this change?
The first impression was how much fun it was and the personal challenges it provided. I always thought I was pretty athletic and somewhat fit until I started and realized some of my own limitations. I couldn’t do many of the exercises, however, was made to feel comfortable at the gym as there were always scaling options and great support from coaches and the people in the box. To be fair this hasn’t really changed for me. The team culture that has been developed in the box is something that really motivates and drives me to come and push myself. The only thing I feel that has changed is that I am now one of the people that are helping and motivating others to reach their own goals which is also rewarding.
What was your first “bright spot”?
This would have to be getting my first Muscle Up in. I remember completing my first Open and ambitiously I tried to RX everything and one of the movements was Muscle Ups. I didn’t even get close. However, I worked on the progressions and over a period of time achieved this goal. On reflection, there were probably even simpler things that were very rewarding early on, for example I could not do a handstand against the wall for fear of hitting my head. I was able to overcome this quite early so this could also be considered a bright spot. Nearly every week I have a real feeling of accomplishment where I feel I have made some real improvements to my health and wellbeing.
What are you working on now?
I am working on a couple of things. Freestanding handstand and handstand walks. Also I am continuing to work on my mobility to get better and therefore be able to lift heavier on some of the core exercises involving squatting. I feel I am progressing pretty well with these goals. Also trying to improve my cardio and be ready for this year’s Open to improve on the scores I posted last year.
What’s your favourite Capax memory?
This is a tough one. What jumps to mind is the first Allstars competition we did. I was probably the weak link in the team but was never made to feel this way. I struggled with a couple of exercises but the encouragement I got from the team and the other supporters from the box was amazing. I also enjoyed when the Box hosted some open workouts and we had lots of people at the gym. I found it very motivating and felt it created a great community spirit.
